Juan Carlos is SVP Technology Innovation and Ecosystem at Telefonica Group, focused on technologies like Edge Computing, NaaS, Network Slicing, AI or Quantum Safe Networks. He oversees the Technology Innovation Plan and manages Telefonica’s participation in standards (O-RAN, ETSI, 3GPP…) and industry fora, representing Telefonica in bodies like the GSMA (as a member of the Technology Group since 2015, active participant in Operator Platform and Open Gateway initiatives, and chairman of Telco Edge Cloud group), Telecom Infra Project (board member), 5TONIC (chairman of this Telefónica’s 5G ecosystem lab), INDESIA (member of the board of this Spanish association for the development of AI in the Industrial sector) or the European Alliance for Industrial Data, Edge and Cloud.
He has developed a good part of his career at Telefonica GCTIO unit with different VP positions: Technology and Architecture (2017-19), Radio Access (2016-17), Transport (2015-16), Operations and Plans (2010-11), Architecture and Plans (2008-9), Fixed Access (2006-7).
Along his 33 years in the Group, he has worked in several Telefónica companies: Germany (2011-14), Data Europe (Italy 2000-2, Germany 2003-5), Latam (1998-2000), R&D (1990-97), playing different technology, architecture, engineering, business development and R&D roles, with periods residing in US and Germany.
He has a Telecom Engineering degree at the Polytechnical University of Madrid and worked for seven years as professor of Computer Science at Carlos III University in Madrid.
Juan Carlos es Director de Innovación Tecnológica y Ecosistemas en el Grupo Telefónica, y enfocado en temas como Edge Computing, NaaS, Network Slicing o AI. Lidera el Plan de Innovación Tecnológica en Red y Sistemas y la participación de Telefónica en Organismos de Estandarización y Asociaciones de Industria (O-RAN, ETSI, 3GPP, etc). Representa a Telefonica en el Grupo de Tecnología de la GSMA, en el Comité Director de INDESIA (asociación española para el desarrollo de la economía del Dato y la IA en el sector industrial) y en el Consejo del Telecom Infra Project Board. Es presidente del Foro de Telco Edge Cloud de la GSMA y del Comité Director de 5TONIC (laboratorio 5G impulsado por Telefónica).
Ha asumido diversas responsabilidades directivas dentro de la Unidad Global CTIO de Telefónica: Tecnología y Arquitectura (2017-19), Acceso Radio (2016-17), Optimización de Transporte (2015-16), Operaciones y Planes (2010-11), Transporte, Arquitectura y Planes (2008-9) y Acceso Fijo (2006-7).
A lo largo de sus 32 años en la compañía, ha ocupado diferentes posiciones dentro del Grupo: Director de Ingeniería de Acceso y Transporte en Telefónica Germany (2011-14), Director de Desarrollo Técnico y de Negocio en Telefonica Data Europe (Italia 2000-2, Alemania 2003-5), Gerente de Operaciones y Recursos en Telefonica Latam (1998-2000), Ingeniero senior en Telefonica I+D (1990-97).
Tiene el título de Ingeniero Superior de Telecomunicaciones por la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid y trabajó como profesor asociado de Ciencias de la Computación en la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, de 1990 a 1997.
